Sorry about the discomfort at the computer. I see people with repetitive stress injuries almost everyday, and let me tell you, even when there are just soft tissue problems, it's a b*tch to resolve unless you change up your routine. Good luck with that.

Given your family history you are very wise to jump on this right away. I hope the doctors will be able to give you some answers as well as some relief. I also thing you are wise to ditch the Ambien. I hope that the weird dreams soon pass and that good and normal sleep patterns return.

Are you sure it's not capal syndrom?
Numbness in the thumb, first two fingers and the inside of the third.
If not threated, it will reach and hurt in your elbow.
It can cause problems to the back and also legs, do to bad circulation.
That was carpal.

Like Joel said, you have the classic symptoms of carpal tunnel. I've been dealing with it too, and it can really be painful to deal with. I should write about it sometime.
But I'm so glad you're working with a doctor, nonetheless. I got so torn up when you first wrote about your problems, because I was scared about the possibilities. But now perhaps it's not so bad :)

Might want to look into some alternatives to help you sleep. I'm fighting insomnia constantly, but don't do so well with sleeping pills because they make me feel drugged up during the day.
One of my new favorites is a homeopathic product called "Calms" made by a company named "Hyland." It's not a sleeping pill, but helps calm your mind so you can fall asleep more easily. A few Calms and a half a Melatonin won't knock me out, but I can get more sleep that way than with nothing at all.
