Rules of the Road

From the From the 1853 New England Economical Housekeeper and Family Receipt Book:

397. A Good Rule.

Whenever you enter an apartment occupied by another individual, if the door is closed before you enter, close it after you. If, on the contrary, it stands invitingly open, let it remain so.

399. Jefferson's Two Rules.

Two rules of Jefferson are very applicable to the times: "Never spend your money before you get it;" and "Never buy what you do not want because it is cheap."

Great rules each!

Wonder if the federal gov't ever read the later by Jefferson?

Actually, the never read the initial rule of your post either.

LOL... thanks for the thoughts to bring a smile to the morning!

You know, rule #397 should be obvious, but people just don't get it. I hate it when I'm having a small orgy and I leave the front door unlocked for my guests and one of the guys locks it behind him when he comes in. Then I have to get out of bed, go downstairs, and let the next guy in, and at that point I'm pretty much guaranteed to be naked and aroused, and what if it's a neighbor wanting to borrow a cup of sugar? If the door's unlocked, she can just come in, pretend not to hear the noises from upstairs, head to the kitchen, get the sugar and leave. If I'm standing there naked with a woody, she's likely to remember that she doesn't know where her husband is. Life is so much more pleasant for everyone when we follow the dictates of etiquette.

I fall victim to 399, but mostly when grocery shopping. Than goodness not when I'm in an electronics store. ;-)

But, if you do want it, and it's cheap, well then. What does that say about you?

*awkward moment of introspection*

Seems I learned Rule 397 early on in life.

As for Rule 399, well, I still have some work to do. Damn sale racks.

#399 - when did this country (and her people) get off this track and on the highway to debt hell?

I own no credit cards and have only a monthly car payment. I enjoy the freedom from credit card slavery!

Very good words of advice indeed. 1853 and they're still applicable.

#399...I've known many people to break this rule, myself included on occasion. And then I wind up letting the thing sit in a closet or drawer somewhere until I realize how silly it was to buy in the first place.

But that doesn't count when it comes to Steve Kelso videos....
