While your reference to "this" makes it sound like one item, the two different photos seem to be showing two different items. It definitely is not the same item flipped upside down. Given that you went to the Ambassador last night where you were given fortune cookies, I'd have to guess that that is a decanter and/or cup for Japanese wine (sake?). Wild guess.
MMMmmmm... The top photo shows that something can be screwed into the top... the bottom one has some string or filament showing... its size in relation to the brick it is on shows that is is small...
It looks like you screw a handle on it and beat the crap out of something...
