I know that you all saw the word 'highlights" and got all excited that I was going to blog about a new color of Loreal for covering up the roots. I can be that shallow when necessary. But tonight, I'm interested in what are the highlights of things that you've done, or places that you've been, in your life? I know, that's a loaded question. There are births and deaths and all -- those things that shape us spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically -- forever. We could go on and on, but I was just considering those once-in-a-lifetime things that you can recall right off the bat -- the first couple of things that come to mind. You know, the things that hit you over the head and you just know that this is one hell of a special time. A few of mine:
1. The Lion King -- London. I'll never forget the first or last five minutes.
2. Royal Albert Hall -- London. Watching Elmer Bernstein conduct the London Symphony Orchestra in his own 80th birthday celebration. They premiered the music to "Far From Heaven," which he wrote.
3. Berlin Symphony Orchestra -- Berlin
4. Auschwitz-Berkenau Concentration Camps, Poland
5. Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, Germany
6. Living in Alaska for a short time.
7. Traveling behind the former Iron Curtain (Poland, Russia, East Germany).
8. Aida and Annie on Broadway.
There are more. Many more, now that I'm thinking about it. But the Ambien is kicking in and the sun has set. I'm in Las Vegas the next two nights -- I'll tell Barry hi for you all. Also, my site has been painfully slow to load today for me....anyone else have that same experience? I hope it gets better.

that is a marvelous idea for a list.
thank you for sharing it and the concept; I am sure to try it.
Whoa. In Alaska! I wanna hear about that!
Hmmm....lemme think: The birth of my niece registered as momentous; I now have my own living doll to send pretty things to. LONDON/1996 with BF before it all got dark and desperate through his alcoholism/infidelities....and OH! having Mark Benecke, doorman at STUDIO 54, point two fingers at me/friend...gaining entrance to what was then the disco/celebrity epicenter of the known universe. Nice post, Lewis.
reviving my dad after his heart attack... he was beating the crap out of me when he had it... i thought about not bothering but decided to do the right thing... he never raised another hand to me again... i think i actually frighten him now... don't know, haven't seen him in years and don't plan to...
I only have a couple that probably come to mind more so than anything else. Life changing yes, memorable not so....
1Seeing my Father lying on the ground covered in what I thought was blood (turned out to be tomato sauce) and a knife standing out form his chest in one of his many drunken pranks.
2 Saving a stranger from a suicide attempt, when my own life had little value - personally
3 Seeing the Soweto (Africa) Gospel Choir perform. It was the most beautiful sound I have ever heard. I hope they come back to Brisbane!...xoxox
Great post Lewis!
The first time I ever laid my hands on a bass guitar was a spiritual moment.
Seeing Evita in London was a memorable moment.
Having my first-ever surprise b'day party at age 25, by my bf is a very happy moment.
That's about all I can think off the top of my head.
oooo have fun in Vegas...tell us ALL ABOUT IT! Barry puts on a GREAT show. He is practically my neighbor in Palm Springs. he has a favorite Mexican restaurant that I run into him at once in awhile.
your blog must be getting a lot of hits hence the slow loading. hmm this is a very good question, and one that requires a lot of digging. on top of my head i would say, my experience in Athens where i represented my school for a world collegiate competition.
I'll have to come up with my own list, but I saw The Lion King on Broadway within a month of its opening. It was incredible. I still get chills.
1) The birth of my daughter
2) The birth of my granddaughter
3) The death of my past two partners
4) Moving to Australia to be with my current partner
5) Receiving my Australian citizenship
...and last but not least even though it has not happened the next biggest highlight will be celebrating my 50th b-day this November because I never thought I'd get there.
This is a really good meme, Lewis, one that I'm going expand onto my own blog. Here are a couple that come to me immediately:
Taking my elder daughter, then six months old, from the hands of the person who escorted her to the US from Korea, and holding her in my arms for the first time.
Same scenario, second daughter.
Meeting Fritz, May 23, 1997, while lying naked on a massage table and looking up to see two bright blue eyes looking down at me.
Marrying Fritz exactly seven years to the day later at the end of the first week of legal same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.
Thanks, and enjoy Vegas!
Mine:
1. Walking behind the walls of the Kremlin back in 1988.
2. Touring El Alcazar in Segovia
3. My brother's wedding
4. Walking through the Statue of Liberty's crown to see all of New York
5. Riding Spaceship Earth for the first time at Disneyworld
2 pop right into my mind, although I'm sure there are many more.
1: On a high school field trip to the United Nations we saw the statue of St. Agnes, serenly holding a lamb. It is made of solid stone and had been standing if front of the Catholic church in Nagasaki when we dropped the atomic bomb. As we walked behind the statue we saw that her back was deeply pitted and cratered. The stone had melted, and everything around her had been instantly vaporized. I will never forget it.
2. Being in the choir, singing Verdi's requiem behind a symphony orchestra, experiencing complete bliss. If I could do that every day for the rest of my life, I would die a happy man.
1. The cancer diagnosis
2. Getting my acceptance letter for grad school
3. My first time
4. Landing at Ben-Gurion airport for my first trip to Israel
5. The day I met my ex
